While Mother’s Day isn’t for another couple of months (May 10th here in North America), it’s time for my Retailers to start placing their Mother’s Day card orders! So for you wholesale folks – check out the new Mother’s Day cards, Father’s Day cards and Parenting cards and get your orders in by March15th so I can ship by early April!
Family is important and so are long weekends… So the Family Day long weekend is a pretty great combination (unless you hate your family or you work weekends). I had a family-filled weekend, which was is good because I like my family… especially my kid. Honestly, she’s the best (and yes I’m biased).
I was cleaning up her playroom the other day and I came across one of her drawings. The week before she had told me that she could draw some of my characters from memory (she sees them around the office) and showed me her version of my turtle (which is great!). At some point after that she added the writing, so I hadn’t actually seen it until I discovered it while cleaning! Yeah, she stole my punchline (I had her read one of my Love cards for a pre-Valentine’s Day post), but it’s amazing that she remembered it… and you gotta love her spelling of “sleep”! It’s so good I’m keeping it forever!
Some people talk about their co-workers as their “work family”… I mostly work alone, but I’ve developed some wonderful relationships with customers. I’d consider them like… uhhh… maybe second cousins? Or weird great aunts? Anyways, they’re all really special to me and when I found out one of my weird wholesale cousins had to close it’s doors I was SO SAD!!! Like, seriously sad! Be sad with me for Land & Sea Gifts in TD Square in Calgary!!! They were a wonderful store, with wonderful staff and I’ll miss them dearly! They were one of my first wholesale accounts and it’s been a real pleasure working with them for the past 12 YEARS! It’s really upsetting that so many brick and mortar shops are forced to close their doors these days and you really have to wonder what we can do as individuals to help. (Less Amazon shopping might be a start?) For those of you that are in Calgary, please make sure you support our other extended work family over at Paper Root Studios in Market Mall! They. Are. The. Best.
Anyways, I had a great Family Day long weekend and I hope you all did too!
In other news, The Walking Dead returns to TV this month and it reminded me that when I did my inventory count last month I thought, “I should put these on sale” while I was counting my Walking Dead magnets. I had a lot of fun studying the characters and creating these illustrations, but doing Fan Art just isn’t what this company is about. So check out The Walking Dead Magnet Collection and score some sweet magnets for only a dollar a piece (regular price is $3)! I’ve done 25 different characters (plus a few from other TV shows) and you can snag one of each for less than $30! That’s a pretty sweet deal. Grab a couple for yourself and a couple for your friends. There are limited quantities, so grab them while supplies last!
We've been busy the past four weeks mailing off orders to some of our awesome retailers! Which awesome retailers?…
Ten years ago I had this crazy little idea to create a line of greeting cards that looked sweet and cute on the outside, but were shocking and sarcastic inside. My taglines had my family in stitches, but I wasn't sure if they were just being nice, or if we all had the same demented sense of humour. So I started showing friends… same thing, they actually thought the cards were funny! So, I decided to give things a go. I registered the company name, website, got a business license, a PST number, etc, etc. But, it wasn't until May 11, 2007 that I took my first step towards becoming serious about business… I tried to get my cards into stores! The very first store I tried was PABOOM in Victoria. When I approached the wonderful lady behind the counter (love you Moira!) I was a little nervous, but the second I told her my line of cards were full of sarcasm and swearing, she wanted to see them! I showed her my line and she placed an order on the spot! Man, I walked out of there with the biggest smile ever! From there everything just kind of happened… Stores were signing on with excitement, I was traveling quite a bit doing shows and meeting customers, online sales were picking up, and now here I am with a decade worth of experience and my cards in nearly 100 stores across Canada! Anyway, it got me thinking of the movie "Sliding Doors"… what would have happened if Moira at Paboom had turned me away? Would I have been heartbroken and given up? Would I be living on the streets selling greeting cards for change? Regardless, I'm sure I'd still be the same smart ass I am today. But thankfully this way I have a roof over my head! So thank you Paboom! Happy 10 Year Anniversary!!!
Anyway, back when I started in 2007 I was operating Hug and Kiss Designs out of the corner of the bedroom I shared with my boyfriend. It was small, but it was all I needed! I'd sit and cut cards while watching reruns of Roseanne on TV, then I'd jump on the SkyTrain and go to work (yeah, I used to have a real job!). Now I'm married to that boyfriend, we have a kid, a house, I haven't had a boss in 9 years (unless you count my kid) and I have my own private office that I don't have to share (unless you count the office cats) and I cut cards while watching Netflix. It's been an amazing 10 years and I hope I get to share decades upon decades more with you folks (in other words, keep buying my cards so I can keep making them!).
