Awhile back I started illustrating characters from The Walking Dead and I ended up putting the artwork on products that I sold online and at shows. A couple weeks back I realized doing “fan art” really isn’t what this company is all about, so I’m clearing out my Fan Art stock!
Family is important and so are long weekends… So the Family Day long weekend is a pretty great combination (unless you hate your family or you work weekends). I had a family-filled weekend, which was is good because I like my family… especially my kid. Honestly, she’s the best (and yes I’m biased).
I was cleaning up her playroom the other day and I came across one of her drawings. The week before she had told me that she could draw some of my characters from memory (she sees them around the office) and showed me her version of my turtle (which is great!). At some point after that she added the writing, so I hadn’t actually seen it until I discovered it while cleaning! Yeah, she stole my punchline (I had her read one of my Love cards for a pre-Valentine’s Day post), but it’s amazing that she remembered it… and you gotta love her spelling of “sleep”! It’s so good I’m keeping it forever!
Some people talk about their co-workers as their “work family”… I mostly work alone, but I’ve developed some wonderful relationships with customers. I’d consider them like… uhhh… maybe second cousins? Or weird great aunts? Anyways, they’re all really special to me and when I found out one of my weird wholesale cousins had to close it’s doors I was SO SAD!!! Like, seriously sad! Be sad with me for Land & Sea Gifts in TD Square in Calgary!!! They were a wonderful store, with wonderful staff and I’ll miss them dearly! They were one of my first wholesale accounts and it’s been a real pleasure working with them for the past 12 YEARS! It’s really upsetting that so many brick and mortar shops are forced to close their doors these days and you really have to wonder what we can do as individuals to help. (Less Amazon shopping might be a start?) For those of you that are in Calgary, please make sure you support our other extended work family over at Paper Root Studios in Market Mall! They. Are. The. Best.
Anyways, I had a great Family Day long weekend and I hope you all did too!
In other news, The Walking Dead returns to TV this month and it reminded me that when I did my inventory count last month I thought, “I should put these on sale” while I was counting my Walking Dead magnets. I had a lot of fun studying the characters and creating these illustrations, but doing Fan Art just isn’t what this company is about. So check out The Walking Dead Magnet Collection and score some sweet magnets for only a dollar a piece (regular price is $3)! I’ve done 25 different characters (plus a few from other TV shows) and you can snag one of each for less than $30! That’s a pretty sweet deal. Grab a couple for yourself and a couple for your friends. There are limited quantities, so grab them while supplies last!
Apologies for any of you that are/were waiting on orders or return emails. Things have been a little crazy around here as Mother Nature dumped nearly 90 centimeters of snow on my little town, followed by a storm that brought wind and freezing rain… But, the power is back on, the icicles have fallen and the snow is slowly turning to slush. So we're back to our normal work schedule.
So, Valentine's Day is just 4 short days away and if you haven't already purchased your Hug and Kiss Designs Valentine's Day card from us, I'm sad to say you've missed that boat! Though, luckily there are several retailers out there that stock their shelves with our cards, so you'll have to check in with them!
But before we celebrate Valentine's Day, we get to celebrate the return of The Walking Dead! We're huge fans around this office, so the return of the show after a mid-season break is WAY more exciting than Valentine's Day! Have you seen our Walking Dead Fan Art?
Fan of The Walking Dead? Around this office we're huuuuuuggggeee fans and we're so excited for the show to come back this month! So we decided to have a little contest! Make your guess on who Negan will introduce to Lucille and you could win a set of our magnets! (retail value of over $70!)
Like any one of our social media pages (icons are at the bottom of this page) and make your guess on our page by the 15th and we'll pick a winner at random on the 18th… Don't worry if you don't guess correctly, all guesses will count. (Though obviously you'll look so much cooler if you guess correctly.)
Of course you could also buy yourself our Walking Dead magnets here… We've done 24 of our favourite characters with more to come! While you're here, you might want to check out our coaster designs too. We're offering up over 60 different designs right now, but once the 15th hits we'll be narrowing the choice down to just a few! So if you'd like to pre-order, do it now and you'll have a wider selection of choices. I know I can't wait to get myself a few Walking Dead coasters!
Also, a Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Yesterday we received an email from the folks over at Fan Expo accepting our late application into the upcoming Vancouver show! (We're awesome, so it's really not that surprising)… We did the show last year and it was so much fun seeing all the amazing work people put into their costumes.
Anyway, there's just over a month for us to prepare and one of the first things we have to get ready are a buttload of our new Fan Art Magnets, which include characters from The Walking Dead, Daredevil, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad (we're always working on new characters, so stay tuned). We'll also be debuting our coasters, which we're super excited about! Not to mention we'll have our usual display of Birthday cards, Christmas cards, 2017 calendars and all our other goodies!
Around here, we're big fans of The Walking Dead (though come on, who isn't?!)
Last year when I started doodling the main characters as Hug and Kiss animals, I was strongly encouraged by customers to start selling them… so I did, as magnets! Sure, it's totally different than what we normally do, but it's fun and people like them! Plus, it's my company and I get to do what I want.
Anyway, even though this coming Sunday is Valentine's Day, I think I'm about 1,000 times more excited for the return of The Walking Dead! Watching zombies get their skulls crushed in is super romantic. Consider it foreplay.
